Culling

Estimate the time and cost of culling your wedding galleries.

Culling is the quiet time sink before editing even begins: thousands of near-identical frames, blinks, and test shots to sort through. Enter your own shot counts and your culling pace, and the calculator estimates what that first pass is actually costing you.

Culling is the bottleneck before the bottleneck

Before a single image gets color or contrast, someone has to decide which frames make the cut. On a wedding shot at a fast frame rate, that can mean staring down five, eight, or ten thousand raw frames per event.

Because culling feels like "just sorting," it rarely gets timed. The calculator makes it visible: enter your raw count, the share you keep, and how fast you move, and it estimates the hours and cost tied up in selection alone.

What drives your culling time

A few variables decide whether culling is a quick afternoon or a multi-day slog.

  • Total raw frames captured per wedding
  • How many near-duplicates you shoot in bursts
  • Your decision pace per image
  • How many review rounds you do before locking selects
Example only: 6,000 raw frames at 1.5 seconds per decision is around 2.5 hours of pure culling, before any editing. Replace with your own numbers. All results are estimates based on your inputs, and this site guarantees no quality, delivery time, client satisfaction, bookings, revenue, or savings.

Common questions

Is culling really worth measuring separately from editing?
Yes. Culling and editing are different kinds of work with different paces. Measuring them separately shows you whether your backlog is a selection problem or an editing problem, which point to different fixes.
What if my keeper rate changes per wedding?
That is normal. Use a typical range or run the estimate a couple of times with different keeper percentages to see how sensitive your culling time is to that one number.
Can an AI-assisted workflow help with culling?
It may help reduce manual first-pass sorting for some photographers. The calculator is the place to compare your current culling cost against alternatives and explore AI-assisted wedding editing workflows.
